Explore Douglas County is presented by the Watkins Museum of History and the Douglas County Historical Society.

This online experience is designed

to highlight the historic stories of people, places,

and ideas from heritage sites across the county.

The first theme is women’s suffrage, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

The struggle for the vote was long and hard fought. Even in winning the vote, not all women were able to access their new enfranchisement for decades, and some communities still struggle with voting rights and access today. Kansas was forefront in the fight for women’s suffrage, extending the right to vote to Kansas women eight years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
