"In 1975, Ralph Reed studied voting patterns of Eudorans from 1880 to 1900. Describing Eudora as having a large German-Catholic population from the Reich area of Germany, Reed discovered that Eudorans voted predominately Republican. They also voted opposite from the rest of Douglas County and the state of Kansas. When other voters supported change, Eudora opposed it; the same was true for wanting change when the rest of the voters did not. For example, Eudorans strongly voted against giving women the vote, favored adding justices to the state Supreme Court, and (by almost 100 percent) opposed a Prohibition Amendment that outlawed alcohol. It’s not surprising that Eudora citizens voted against alcohol prohibition: Each Sunday was 'bock beer day,' according to Eudora newspapers that commented frequently on the unruly incidents associated with drinking the 'bock,' a dark beer at the bottom of a beer barrel."

Eudora has always stood in contrast to the rest of Douglas County in many regards. While large parts of Douglas County supported suffrage, a majority of Eudora residents did not support it. Even though the Eudora community largely opposed suffrage, a man who grew up in the Eudora Township ended up playing a crucial role in the suffrage movement in Kansas.

As governor he supported progressive causes like Prohibition, women’s suffrage, improvement of roads, and the formation of a Public Utilities Commission. Stubbs supported Suffrage to such an extent, that he loaned his automobile to Suffragettes while they campaigned for the right to vote in Topeka in 1912. Governor Stubbs’ wife, Stella H. Stubbs, was an activist in the Suffrage Movement.

That man was named Walter Roscoe Stubbs. Governor Stubbs was the 18th Governor of Kansas, he served from 1909-1913, during the height of the Suffrage Movement in Kansas.
